Automatic Bucket Filler

It's been a while since my last NXT project, and since i got a week off for CNY so why not do some home improvement to make the home a better place to live in, right ?

In the house i live in, "someone" just have a strange habit where they like to leave the tap dripping all the time and i can never understand the logic or the rationale behind it. So i decided to probe deeper and find out the answer - "Oh, i just leave it dripping all the time so it will fill up the bucket automatically" was the reply i got :S

The problem was the bucket overflows all the time that is a tremendous waste of H2O...Hence, i came up with the Automatic Bucket Filler.

This system consists of one motor and one touch sensor. When the water level is low, the ball drops to a lower level and the touch sensor is released, signalling the NXT to rotate the motor to turn on the tap; when the water level is high, the ball raises due to buoyancy and presses the touch sensor, signalling the NXT to turn off the tap.
The motor turns the tap.
The ball rises and lowers depending on the level of the water, and when the level is high enough the ball will press on the touch sensor to signal the NXT to turn off the tap.

Ok, i know you can't wait to ask me how much can i save with this system and what's the ROI ? After doing some simple calculations,

Annual savings on water bill : RM 5
Cost of Mindstorms NXT      : RM 1400
Return on investment (ROI): RM 1400/RM 5 = 280 years !

Hey, just 280 years only mah, not bad wat... after 280 years can start saving RM 5 every year oredi, so chun !

Hi there! I've stumbled upon your website when I was googling for Lego Mindstorms in Malaysia. I'm a malaysian (in KL) and I was kinda hoping to get some tips on where to buy in Malaysia. I also noticed in your posts of some Mindstorm classes being conducted... Could you email me more information on this?

I'm totally new to mindstorms and might be interested to join your class. Appreciate if you could help me here. thanks!

Please let me know how to contact you!

Hi Jesse, before i tell you where you can get your Mindstorms NXT, FYI there are 2 versions of NXT: the retail version and the educational version. The retail version sells for RM1399; The educational version RM1850.

If you intend to buy the kit for personal use, i'd recommend going for the retail version and it's available in toy stores like Toys'R'Us & Isetan, or dedicated LEGO stores like Brickboytoys in Sunway Pyramid,The Gardens 1U,and the upcoming Tropicana Mall.

As for the educational version, you can visit www.sasbadi.com and contact them directly. The price hike of the educational version is compensated by a basic training course upon purchase of the kit.

If you are interested in checking out the Mindstorms classes you may contact Eric Tan(0126119130) or log on to www.creativerobotics.com.my for more info.

Hi Keano!

Thanks for your kind help. I really appreciate it!

Although i've checked out both websites (sasbadi and creativerobotics), i'm still kinda blur. Anyway, I'll be dropping by to visit creativerobotics's shop in summit...hopefully i'll be more enlightened there!

thanks again for your help! i'll try to keep you up to date on this.

Hi!

Googled about mindstorms, and stumbled on your wonderful blog!

FYI, I am from brickbastion.com. I am wondering whether there is a demand for LEGO Mindstorms products.

Thinking of getting them from the sole distributor, and selling them 10% off retail. What you guys think?

Cheers!

Hi Karen,

I'm not sure whether Eric knows the Khong brothers personally but he's definitely a familiar face in the local Mindstorms scene.

In fact, i got my set from Ebay Malaysia at RM 850 :) and i have become a friend of the seller after the purchase.

Hi,

Now, i thought the name Keano seems so familiar, so that's where i have seen your name before, I presumed you bought your set from Chiu (Kelana Jaya)?

I bought from Chiu, he got his set from US.....

Are you the one with Sasbadi??

I am the mummy who is more interested in robotics than her sons but am getting them to be interested too.....

Coz i read that Eric conducts workshop.... wonder how he charges, any idea?

Karen
